Wenzel Great Basin 10 Person Tent

The Wenzel Great Basin 10-person tent makes it so that you don’t need to rent a cabin to let your family enjoy the outdoors. Multi-diameter, shock-cord fiberglass poles allow you to set up the tent quickly and easily while providing greater headroom than average. Durable polyester is used to construct the tent with a welded polyethylene floor. A removable fly is also included with a ridge pole to create awnings. A D-style door lets you into the tent, featuring a loft and pockets for gear storage

Camp in Comfort in All but the Worst Rainstorms, December 12, 2015

If there was a 4.5 star option – I’d choose that one. It’s too nice of a tent for a 4, so I’m choosing 5 but with a caveat.

First, this is a nice large tent that allows you to stand up and move around. It probably sleeps 10, but we use it with only two people and a large dog who has her bed in the middle of the tent floor. It’s relatively simple to set up with two people and could probably be set up by just one person, if necessary.

The zippers on the windows and door all work smoothly and the rain guard fits nicely.

That’s where the caveat comes in – the rain guard. It works well for light showers and moderate rain but in the spring of 2015, we got caught in a true downpour in Red Rock Canyon in Oklahoma. OMG. This was no ordinary rain – it literally fell in buckets from the night sky. I woke up to a fine mist on my face and soon after, my friend on the other side of the tent woke up to a puddle on the cot. The rain was pounding down so hard that it penetrated the rain guard and after that, it pooled on the tent ceiling and dripped through.

That’s the only time it happened, though, and we’ve had it in moderate rains other times without trouble.

So, the rain guard, while good – is not enough to withstand driving rain that does not let up. If you think you’re going to be in a rain that hard, I’ll tell you what we did – the day after – and it worked perfectly. We purchased one of those cheap plastic drop cloths painters use. Just a lightweight one that cost under $5 and the both of us worked it up and under the rain guard – so it formed an impenetrable layer between the tent and the rain guard. It rained again the next night – not quite so hard but we didn’t get a drop in the tent. Unfortunately, because it’d been wet the night before, it was quite humid in the tent. We run a personal propane heater in the tent to stay warm, so it was a little like a sauna. LOL

It’s unlikely you’ll ever be set up in a rain like the one we had that night, but take along a plastic drop cloth just in case. You can open the windows to vent the tent.

After the rainy camping trip – we brought the tent home, set it up, aired it and cleaned it out and the next time we set it up in the summer it was just perfect. There are too many great things about this tent to really rate it down because Mother Nature decided to send a deluge one night.

If it’s just two of you, take a big rug for the center of the tent, bring a couple of lawn chairs in and hand a lantern from the hook at the highest part of the tent roof. Plenty of room for cots, a cooler and, as I mentioned, a dog bed.

I would absolutely buy this tent again. Just bring along that plastic drop cloth.

I took my time to research other tents (within price range), and what people say about them. And finally, I’ve bought this one for my family camping trip to Main. There was 4 people and the dog. Plenty of space for everyone. We’ve placed supplies and a small dining table with benches in the middle room. And two beds in each “side” room.

INSTALLATION: It took me around 10 minutes to raise this tent from start to finish. VERY easy! And even less to disassemble it. Had no trouble at all to pack it back into it’s original carrying bag. Please note, that it was our first camping trip in decades.

WEATHER: We’ve experienced almost two days of heavy rain inside this tent. No leaks from roof, floor or anywhere. Keep in mind that all windows and door must be closed, of course. The “roof ventilation” is great. Meaning that it is a summer tent. If you’re planning a trip, and the nights are cold – it’s the same as sleeping outside. So, get REALLY warm sleeping bags.

OVERALL: Of course there are better tents, and tents a lot larger then this one. Questions for you to answer are: Do you really NEED it? And do you want to spend couple thousands of dollars instead of couple hundreds? For me it was easy to answer those questions. I’m not planning an expedition. I will MAYBE use this tent once or twice a year. It is more than roomy enough for my family. It’s quick and easy to install and uninstall everything. And the construction is very durable.

So, I would recommend this tent to anyone who wants a nice roomy tent without paying too much.

I returned this tent because the pole snapped on our first time out. If that had not of happened I would have been very happy with this purchase. This tent was spacious for the whole family, set up was easy, and breakdown as well. The tent also stayed dry after light rain. I just could not see this text holding up in the long hall after it snapped and material ripped on first time using. Our last tent was used for over 12 years and is still in great condition just to small for our expanded family. I will be in the market for something more sturdy.
