This pen is part of my travel kit for self defense purposes. Considering that I travel through the airports primarily, I find that having this pen on my person at all times is one of the best ways that I can defend myself against a potential aggressor when my sidearm is not available. The pen is easy to deploy on a moments notice and packs quite a punch as well.
The pen writes well, but I do not generally use it for my memoirs. It stays on a lanyard around my neck or in a shirt pocket within reach at all times.
For many years I have been traveling around the world and personal safety has always been a concern. This pen fills that void where a handgun or a knife are not practical.
The pen has cleared TSA checks EVERY time I have sent it through the X-Ray and has never been deemed worthy of a second look.
The construction of the pen is very sturdy:
    5.7″ overall length
    CNC machined 6061 aircraft aluminum
    Screw-on/off cap
Hauser Parker ball point pen cartridge included
    Matte black finish
I’ve seen some videos of this pen crushing a coconut, so its bound to have that same devastating effect on a would-be attacker’s skull. Thankfully I have not had to deploy this pen for self defense purpose, because frankly, I’d rather not be in close combat with anyone, but I feel very confident that this pen will work wonders in a pinch.
Please remember that not everything is worth defending, so If someone is trying to take your wallet and you are overpowered, do not attempt to use this pen to prevent the wallet theft, just give it up and live to see another day.

This has been an excellent pen for the several months I have owned it. I have had no need to use it for it’s tactical purposes, but I do think of it as an indispensable EDC (Every Day Carry) item. When the original cartridge ran dry, I swapped it out for a Fisher Space Pen refill, which was quick and easy. This is an extremely sturdy pen, with a great, tight clip and a very unintrusive appearance. I know that it was risky, but I have had no issues with airport security and this pen in my backpack. I have included a picture of the most use this pen has gotten so far, and that was when I went to a mall, and most of the stall locks were broken, and the door was too far away to just hold shut, and I was able to use this pen as a makeshift lock. If you are looking for an excellent pen that is very sturdy, look no further. It rides low in your pocket, but high enough to grab when needed. This pen, as I stated, is very unobtrusive and it is non threatening, unlike other “tactical” pens. That makes this pen great for the business man.

Now, onto the cons. I only have two cons for this pen. First off, the finish rubs off quickly. I have attached a photo that shows where the finish has rubbed off in my pocket up against my pocket knife. I have since moved my pocket knife to the other side of the pocket, and I have not experienced any issues. Nevertheless, this doesn’t affect the usability of this pen. The other thing is the pen either twists off its cap (somehow) in my pocket, or it doesn’t come uncapped when I need it to, and I have to struggle. This could probably be solved with just a little bit of graphite lube or some other lube. For these two things, I have taken off one star.

Schrade vs. CRKT Williams, February 3, 2013

For self-defense the Schrade is a thicker pen with a blunter end and is thus in my opinion is better suited for serious deep bruising or breaking of bones. The Schrade’s relatively wide flat top allows for a very secure grip with thumb squarely on top. The CRKT Williams is slimmer with a pointier tip. It will in my option do a serious puncture wound if used. The CRKT diameter thins in the center providing for a firm grip plus a pleasant look.

The Schrade cap twists off with 2 ½ turns. The cap can then sit, somewhat inelegantly, on the back of the pen. The CRKT Williams cap snaps off nicely then sits on the back with a secure click. Once snapped on the back the CRKT cap looks like a molded part of the pen.

Neither pen is great for writing. However, I am used to using a lighter pen. Of the two the CRKT fits best in the hand.

If I could choose only one it would be the CRKT Williams. It carries better in the front pocket, has an elegant design, a better finish, and the cap functions better for constant daily use.
