I this for my ’99 TJ and the mount is stable and keeps the antenna in view when on the trails. Installation is straight forward but I would recommend getting some round or flat head machine screws to install with instead of the supplied hex heads if you plan on mounting this right up to the inside lip of the fender as described in the installation instructions. The way the edge of the hood comes down on them there’s going to be a little deflection if you don’t change the bolts or notch the inside edge of the hood. Just to be clear I am not talking about cutting any part of the hood you can normally see. I opted to move the mount a little more forward so the edge of the mount is against the outside edge of the hood but mostly because I liked the better view of the antenna that it offered and the signal is better than it would be closer to the near-vertical windshield we enjoy.

Measure twice and drill once will go a long way with this install. Measuring three of four times will go even farther. If you plan on installing the fire-ring on the bottom of the mount keep in mind the wide rubber insulation. If you forget (as a buddy of mine did) search the web there’s an alternate was to assemble the washers and bolt and such so the fire-ring sits on top of the mounting plate.

One important note for when you get ready to tune your radio and antenna with this mount. I struggled with high SWR until I found some notes on one of the Jeep forums about grounding the mount. Just because the mounting bolts go through the fender and the volt meter tells you there is continuity between the mounting plate and the vehicle body doesn’t mean there’s ENOUGH grounding. I had to grind a little paint off the fender (about a square inch) so the mounting plate had contact with a large enough surface area. It makes a huge difference. Another option if that makes you a little nervous is to use a grounding strap, but since you’re punching holes though the fender to mount this I suspect taking off a little paint isn’t a major concern for you.

I bought this mount because finding a good place to mount an antenna on a Jeep TJ is not exactly easy. I also have a roof rack which can interfere with signal dispersion. This seemed like the best option. Everything I needed was included but they could have included a paper template for drill locations. I am using a firestik 4′ antenna on this mount and I do feel it puts too much stress on the fender with that big antenna on there. The do say it will support up to 4′ antennas. Also the antenna kind of angles out a few degrees which I don’t really like.

When you mount this keep in mind you need to leave room for the cable connector underneath.

Wouldn’t buy it again. Good quality and everything but just don’t love the mount and how solid it is in this location. The body is just not strong enough in this area for this kind of use. Now I just keep the antenna in the back of the jeep and only mount it when I need it to keep from undue stress on the metal.

Make sure to take into account the fire ring when drilling. I had to re-drill my mount because I didn’t leave enough room for it. Not sure why this is not mentioned in the instructions, but that’s why I didn’t give it five stars. Also note that the connector for the CB isn’t attached, but its pretty easy to do. They ship it this way on purpose so you can easily fit the cable through tight areas or when drilling through your cab.
