Great radio value, requires a little tech cleanup by the end user but that’s fine., July 3, 2015

This radio was a great way for me to get started with my HAM license. I was able to quickly and painlessly download the repeaters for my area into CHIRP and program the radio that way. Due to low audio, I drilled out the microphone hole and that fixed the problem. Now people can hear me with solid levels and full quieting. I leave the FSMA to BNC adapter on all the time so I can swap antennas and cables quickly. The battery catch required a little finessing with a file so it could be removed manually. As a very affordable way to get a very usable radio with a long life battery, I’m fine doing a little refining to get it to work well. For my next radio, I’d buy another one of the same.

Tested it today in the mountains. Has great range and is easier to use than my Kenwoods. I like the audible function feature so I don’t have to look at the screen (as it’s tucked away under layers). Seems like this is a real game changer for affordable quality dual band VHF/UHF communications for outdoor environments. The 8 watt capability is certainly handy in the mountains where much of the comm is not line -of-sight.

I needed another radio for our group and in this case for the slight cost difference to get the extra battery power I ordered one of the radios with the extended battery. Everything works fine! Very happy with the set up. The radio itself is a very good unit, and we’re all very pleased with the cost savings and built in abilities of the radios. I would have no problem buying others if we need more!
