Good RTL_SDR to be sure and HF on the Q branch is handy for instance I can tune and record the entire AM broadcast band. That said, this thing has a lot of noise on HF. I have connected this to my 5BTV vertical antenna and the noise is just insane across the entire HF band. Same antenna feeding an IC718 has little noise. But this is a common issue in RTL_SDR devices.

So far so good on day 1.
Make sure to go to rtl-sdr.com and read the quick start guide! following the instructions on the quick start guide. It will have you download the SDR# application (for windows) and run the install-rtlsdr.bat and then the zdiag.exe to install the drivers. I had FM broadcast band immediately after this and Am broadcast bands and 6mhz shortwave!
Day 6) apparently you need to use direct sample mode for the lower bands in sdr# application. I thought it had an unconverter originally but I was mistaken! It has some sort of LNA.
Day 9) this is fairly noisy but it’s a great way to receive frequencies below 24mhz without an unconverter! It has a built-in LNA of sorts. It could use some further filtering but it’s really an all-in-one rtl-sdr solution! I would recommend it to anyone starting out. Make sure to buy a long wire antenna with balun and connect to into for the lower bands!
