Necessary to keep Platypus bite valve cleaner, November 17, 2016

All 4 of the covers we ordered worked well for my family. They closed securely enough. I was careful to check how well they closed when we got them, considering the other reviews where some people seem to get duds that pop open too easily. I am glad we got them, considering we already had the Platypus bags, and I wouldn’t want to use them without the covers.

This cover did require looking up a YouTube video to figure out how to install it on our Platypus Big Zip water pouches. I recommend doing that, so you don’t mess up your valve, pulling apart the wrong parts. The only thing you pull off is the soft rubbery part of the bite valve, nothing hard plastic.

These covers really should be part of the design that is included when you buy the pouch, not a separate item. Incorporate them into the purchase price and include a good cover as part of the product.

Despite recommending the cover if you have a Platypus, I have to say, after our trip, I wish I had just saved my money & gone with old fashioned water bottles. One of our 4 Platypus Big Zips never lost the very strong chemical plastic taste it gives the water (strange, because the other 3 did loose the plastic taste fairly quickly. I kept running fresh water through that one, hoping it would go away, for over a month, but it never did.) They are more of a pain to fill & clean than a water bottle, they leak more easily, they look more strange, so not as great if you are walking around a city like Tokyo (some people wondered if they were I.V.’s), and then getting them to dry inside for storage so they don’t grow funky stuff is near impossible (I don’t live in a desert.) I thought it would be convenient & great to be able to carry the day’s water, especially since I medically need to drink a lot. It was just more of a pain, and I hated drinking the water from it because of the taste, so halfway through the trip, it went in the suitcase to be replaced by regular water bottles. Really, the only circumstance I can think of where I might recommend these is if you are going to be driving a motorcycle for long periods of time, somewhere it is so hot that you need to keep hydrated, but you can’t reach around to get a water bottle while driving, so you keep one of these in your mouth. Can’t even really recommend for regular hiking. It was a nice idea in my head (you’re more likely to drink more if you don’t have to stop & get a water bottle out, right? Yeah, well, not if the water tastes like plastic chemicals. Reaching around for a water bottle doesn’t seem like such a big deal, when the trade offs are weighed.) Maybe rock climbing, where your hands are occupied again? But only if you really can’t take breaks & just use a regular water bottle.

I bought two of these to go with two new platypus hydration systems. i would give it five stars, but after a few uses, one of the two doesn’t always stay closed. It appears that the section that stays on the valve may be slightly warped or dented, and that prevents the cover part from holding properly. I have seen other people with this complaint, and unfortunately i have to second it. The other one works perfectly. It may be an issue of quality control.

It doesn’t really fir properly, so when you have this on you can barely get hold of the bite valve to get anything out. I bought it at the same time as the bladder, so I thought maybe Platypus just made crappy bite valves, but once I took this off I found there’s nothing at all wrong with the bite valve. A super poor design, which is disappointing. i find it very unsanitary to have the bite valve flopping around when I’m running. Might see if my Camelbak cover will fit.
