This review is from: Kidde KN-COSM-XTR-BA Nighthawk Battery Operated Combination Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Voice Warning, Intelligent Alarm Technology (Tools & Home Improvement)
After 7 years, my older Kiddie (smoke/carbon monoxide) was at its end of life. I liked the functions of the alarm/voice alarm features in my older Kiddie, so the new Kiddie was the perfect upgrade. This new model only takes two AA batteries (included) compared to my older Kiddie model which took three AA batteries. The new Kiddie model, mounted right up to my original Kiddie brackets, there was no need to install the new bracket.

Very Sensitive and VERY loud, January 18, 2014

I purchased two of this seems to be the brand everyone has recommended. I am fortunate enough to say that these have never really had to go through a real test of a fire. However, plenty of burnt dinners have given these minor tests. They work. They are LOUD and they speak to you to tell you what the issue is (fire or carbon monoxide). I did however make the mistake of putting this in a hallway directly across from my kitchen. Since it is pretty sensitive this thing goes off sometimes even when I can’t see any smoke. Also, when you press the button for the “hush mode” and the thing still keeps screaming away sometimes which annoys me. However, I am relatively confident that in a real emergency situation, this would wake me up and give me plenty of time to either put out a minor fire myself or get my family out of the house quickly.

As far as installation goes, it was a snap. This has two parts two it. A thin circle piece of plastic that you screw in place and then the device itself which you press against the first piece, rotate and then it is set in place. Super easy for when you have to replace the batteries or so far in my case, when you just have to take it down while you are cooking.

Not much to say, except that it’s a smoke detector that works and was easy to install. The dual feature with carbon monoxide detection is a nice touch. I installed it next to a photoelectric smoke alarm. If you’re not familiar with the different types, keep in mind that smoke detectors typically use one of two types of sensors: ionization or photoelectric. This model uses ionization, which is better at detecting flaming fires. Photoelectric is better at detecting smoldering fires. It is recommended that you have both throughout your home. There are some detectors out there that feature both sensors, but none of them that I’ve seen can also do carbon monoxide detection, which makes this an attractive purchase for the price. My photoelectric alarm is a little higher tech than this Kidde, but then again, that’s not why I purchased it. Buy with confidence…
