This cooler was exactly what I expected.

First off, what I measured; Current draw at 13.5 Volts was about 4.7 Amperes. At 12.2 Volts the current draw was about 3.5 Amperes. The manual says 3.5 to 4.8 Amperes, The manual agrees with my measurements.

Secondly, this is a thermoelectric cooler. It uses about 40 – 60 Watts of energy so it will not cool down a load of warm soda in a few hours. The manual recommends running this for a few hours prior to adding your material. If you put warm sodas in this, expect to wait 20-25 (or more) hours for them to get cold. If you put in cold sodas, this will keep them very cold while running.

Regarding the cord heating problems that others have stated. I connected this to a ‘motorcycle’ DC receptacle that I had purchased years ago. My receptacle got quite warm while this cooler was running. This was not a problem with the cooler’s plug. It was my receptacle not being able to handle the current draw. If you have a good quality receptacle, this device will work good, without heat problems. My plug did not get hot or melt. If you have a worn receptacle it could get hot.

The plug on this device has a built in (removable) 7.5 Ampere fuse. I would not recommend running this with on a vehicle with the motor off as it would probably run your battery down in after a few hours, there is no low voltage shut off built in.

    Perfect Travel Cooler/Portable Fridge, July 29, 2014
    By
    PC-G (Albuquerque, NM USA) –

UPDATE 2016: Cooler now has about 25,000 miles on it and is still working perfectly. Best value of any cooler I’ve ever owned! I did notice that it seemed to struggle at 7000′ altitude, during a recent trip through Taos and Cimarron, NM. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Took this 28qt cooler on a 4000-mile summer trip from NM-TX-OK-MO-IL-IN-WI and back. Outdoor temps were mostly in the 80s and 90s, but hit 106 in Texas on the way home. Hot summer weather was no match for this cooler! I measured dimensions carefully before purchasing and the cooler fit perfectly in the back seat floorboard of my 2009 Prius. It was like it was designed for that floor space! My Prius kills the 12V outlet power when the car is shut off (at gas stations and rest areas), so there was never any danger of running the car battery down. Food stayed cold on the road (without freezing) and although somewhat heavy to carry when loaded, the wall adapter let me use the cooler as a small fridge at motels that didn’t have one; just unplugged from the car and plugged into an outlet in the motels/hotels where I stayed. When camping at a no-electric cabin in Wisconsin, I put a 5lb bag of ice in and it worked okay, but not great; ice only lasted about 36 hours. Also used ice for an 8-hour pontoon boat rental/outing and 5lb ice worked fine (although I could have used the 12V cord on the boat if I had remembered to pack it). This cooler is a HUGE improvement over anything I’ve used before. Food (fruit, lunch meat, even rice and beans!) stayed so fresh in this cooler, I put it all in the fridge when I got home and am still enjoying it almost a week later. No more soggy junk pulled out of old, funky ice water after a long trip! Amazon price (about $89) is low compared to other on-line suppliers and shipping only took a few days — faster than promised, actually. FINAL POINT: Don’t forget to order the 120V wall adapter and don’t cover the vent on the top of your cooler. If it can’t breathe, it won’t work.
